Player’s stories

CHRISPIN JOSEPH  2015/2016 - KISUBI HIGH SCHOOL - UGANDA

Chris has thrived in various local and national competitions, where he greatly evolved his leadership skills. This brought him to lead and support his current team Senior Kings, and founded the junior basketball team, Junior Kings.

Chris says, "I have come to realize that basketball as a sport, can bring people together and help them find common ground. However, I had never experienced this until I started traveling to various tournaments in Tanzania."  He supports the Pamoja Basketball Project to this day and is an excellent example for our youth.

Even though he has become a famous player in Tanzania, he will always see his home basketball team as his family. "We either stand together and succeed, or we stand as individuals and fail."

Chris has become one of Arusha's most notable sports entrepreneurs. He owns a gear store in Arusha and delivers equipment across Tanzania. Chris believes he can still achieve a lot through playing basketball and is thankful for what it has taught him beyond the game.

ALLY MOHAMED 2015/2016 SSAKU SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL- UGANDA

Ally, like many young players of his generation in Arusha, was introduced to the game of basketball on Soweto grounds.  Through PBP, Ally first learned how the game of basketball could support his community and his future goals. Because of his talent, Ally received a nomination to go to Uganda, where he was awarded a basketball scholarship for two years of a college education.

Ally explains, "The Pamoja Basketball Scholarship Program allowed me to bond with my host school's administration and other international students. I realized that people build trust through sports. I was thankful for my community and learned how I could give back."

Ally is now playing for the JKT Basketball Club and the Tanzania National Basketball team. He also volunteers for the National Service Army in Tanzania. He is one of the four players in the country on the waitlist to attend college in the US. He wants to further his education and someday play professional ball. Ally continues to inspire many young players in Arusha.

MTAMBO MGEJWA 2013 / 2016 KISUBI HIGH SCHOOL – UGANDA

As to many young basket ballers’ experience could be in many places, winning the trust of coaches / teams attention for his name to be on a team roster was a big challenge not until when Scorpion basketball club was formed.

Mtambo says ”I can’t forget my first experiences with big clubs in Arusha and how hard it was for me to get acceptance .I was so touched by the way I was welcomed to join Mtaani basketball program and later was accepted to play for Scorpion Basketball club.

Mtambo learnt that “through hard working and patience you can always achieve anything you wish for in life”.
